How to Find a Printer IP Address on Any Device: 6 Ways
Written by Printers Setup Editorial Team · Updated

To find a printer IP address, the fastest place to look is the printer itself: open the network or Wi-Fi status screen, or print a network configuration report. If the printer is already working on a computer, Windows 11 and macOS will also show the address, and your router’s app lists it among the connected devices. You need the address to add a printer manually, to open its web settings page, or to reserve it in the router. This guide shows six ways to find it, from easiest to most technical.
What you are looking for
On a home network, an IP address looks like four numbers separated by dots, for example 192.168.1.25, 192.168.0.40 or 10.0.0.12. The first three groups usually match those of your computer and phone, because the router gives every device an address from the same range.
A few things that are easy to confuse with it:
| You see | What it is | Is it the IP address? |
|---|---|---|
| 192.168.1.25 | IPv4 address | Yes, this is the one to use |
| fe80::1a2b:… | IPv6 link-local address | Not for normal setup |
| A4:5D:36:… | MAC (hardware) address | No |
| HP-Envy-6000 or EPSON123456 | Host name or Bonjour name | No, but it can also identify the printer |
| 169.254.x.x | Self-assigned address | Means the printer did not get an address from the router |
If you only see a 169.254 address, the printer is not properly connected to your network yet. Go back to our wireless printer setup guide or the Ethernet printer setup guide before going further.
Method 1: the printer’s control panel
Printers with a touchscreen or a small display show the address in their network menus. The wording varies by maker, but the path usually looks like one of these:
- Tap the Wi-Fi or wireless icon on the home screen, then Details, View network settings or Status.
- Open Settings (or Setup), then Network, then Wi-Fi Status or Network Status.
- On wired printers, look under Wired LAN or Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
Write the address down exactly, including every dot.
Method 2: print a network configuration report
Almost every network printer can print a page listing its connection details: network name, signal strength, IP address, MAC address and host name. The report goes by different names, such as network configuration page, Wi-Fi status report, network status sheet or WLAN report.
- On printers with a screen, look in the Reports, Print Reports or Network menu.
- On printers without a screen, it is usually a button combination, for example holding the information or Wi-Fi button for a few seconds. The exact sequence differs between models, so check the printer’s manual or the maker’s support page rather than pressing buttons at random.
The report is also the best proof that the printer really is on the network you expect: compare the network name on it with the one your computer uses.
Method 3: Windows 11
If the printer is already added and printing from a Windows PC:
- Open Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer, then Printer properties.
- On the Ports tab, look for the ticked port. A port called
IP_192.168.1.25or similar shows the address directly. Click Configure Port to see it on its own. - If the port is a WSD port, Windows found the printer through network discovery and does not show the address here. In that case, Hardware properties on the printer’s page in Settings may show the address on some printers; otherwise use one of the other methods.
You can also open a Command Prompt and type arp -a to list devices your PC has talked to recently, but matching an entry to the printer is harder than reading the network report. For adding the printer once you have the address, see how to add a printer in Windows 11.
Method 4: Mac
- Open the Apple menu, then System Settings, then Printers & Scanners.
- Select the printer, then Options & Supplies.
- On the General tab, look at the location and device details. A printer added by IP address shows the address; a printer found through AirPrint usually shows its Bonjour name instead.
- If you see a Show Printer Webpage button, click it: the printer’s web page opens in your browser and the address appears in the address bar.
Our guide on how to add a printer on Mac explains how to add it by IP if it does not appear automatically.
Method 5: your phone or the maker’s app
The setup apps from printer makers usually show the printer’s network details on its status or settings page. Look for Printer information, Network or Advanced settings. On a Chromebook, the printer settings page in Settings, Advanced, Print and scan, Printers shows the address of a saved printer when you edit it.
Method 6: the router’s device list
Every home router keeps a list of connected devices, usually called Connected devices, Clients, DHCP clients or Devices. Open your router’s app or type the router’s address into a browser (it is printed on a label on the router or in the provider’s instructions) and look for the printer by name. Printers often appear under the maker’s name or a model code. The same screen is where you reserve the address.
Reserve the address so it stays the same
Routers hand out addresses automatically and can give the printer a different one after a power cut or a router restart. Computers that added the printer by IP will then fail to print. To prevent this:
- In the router’s device list, find the printer.
- Choose Reserve IP, Address reservation, Always use this IP or a similar option.
- Restart the printer and check that the report shows the same address.
A reservation in the router is easier to manage than typing a fixed (static) address on the printer itself, because the router then knows about it and avoids giving the same address to another device. Our Ethernet setup guide covers this in more detail for wired printers.
What to do with the address
- Add the printer manually on a computer that cannot find it: Windows 11, Mac and Chromebook all accept an IP address in their add-printer screens. Android does too; see how to print from Android.
- Open the printer’s web settings page by typing the address into a browser on the same network. You can change network settings, update firmware and turn features such as AirPrint on or off there.
- Share the printer with every device at home. See how to share a printer on a network.
Opening the printer’s web page with the address
Once you have the address, typing it into a browser opens the printer’s built-in settings page; HP calls it the Embedded Web Server, Epson Web Config, Brother Web Based Management and Canon Remote UI. Use https:// in front of the address first and expect a certificate warning, which Brother describes as normal for its printers’ self-signed certificates. Changing settings needs the admin password; on current Brother models it is printed on the back of the machine and on the network configuration report. Our guide to accessing a printer’s web interface covers the login and what to change.
Mesh systems and changing addresses
Mesh Wi-Fi systems hand out addresses automatically, and the printer can receive a new one after a power cut. Google’s Nest help uses a wireless printer as its example of a device that should get a fixed address through a DHCP reservation. Our printer on mesh Wi-Fi guide shows where the reservation lives in a typical mesh app.
If you cannot find any address
If none of these methods shows an address, the printer is probably not on the network. Common setup reasons are a wrong Wi-Fi password, a printer that only supports the 2.4 GHz band, or a router that was replaced. Our guide to connecting a printer to a new Wi-Fi network walks through reconnecting it, and the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi setup guide covers dual-band routers.
Frequently asked questions
What does a printer IP address look like?
On a home network it is usually four numbers separated by dots, such as 192.168.1.25 or 10.0.0.12. The first three numbers normally match those of your computer and phone, because they are on the same network.
Can I find the printer IP address without a computer?
Yes. Printers with a screen show it in the network or Wi-Fi status menu, and most printers can print a network configuration report from the control panel. Your router's phone app also lists it.
Why does my printer IP address keep changing?
The router hands out addresses automatically (DHCP) and may give the printer a different one after a restart. Create a DHCP reservation in the router so the printer always gets the same address.
Is the IP address the same as the MAC address?
No. The MAC address is a fixed hardware identifier written as six pairs of letters and numbers. The IP address is the network address the router assigns. Both are listed on the network report.
Does the printer have an IP address if it is connected by USB?
No. A printer connected only by USB is not on the network, so it has no IP address on your home network. Connect it to Wi-Fi or Ethernet first.
